Anne Tompkins Nominated as the Next United States Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina
Anne Tompkins, Charlotte partner in Alston & Bird’s Litigation and Trial Practice Group, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina. The nomination has been submitted to the United States Senate for confirmation.
Tompkins was among seven lawyers nominated for U.S. Attorney’s posts across the country. Senator Kay Hagan called Tompkins "a fine North Carolinian" and someone who is "incredibly qualified for this important position."
Anne Tompkins has extensive experience, including five years in the U.S. Attorney's office. As a federal prosecutor, Tompkins supervised the U.S. attorney's office's violent crimes unit and led prosecutions of drug trafficking organizations. She handled everything from white collar and environmental crimes to a death penalty case. In 2004, Tompkins spent eight months in Iraq with a team of American lawyers who advised the tribunal that prosecuted Saddam. She referred to this assignment as "the biggest thing I’ve ever done."
As a partner at Alston & Bird, Tompkins focuses on white collar criminal defense and advises corporations on how to stay out of trouble by complying with federal laws and regulations. She is listed in "
The Best Lawyers in America" in 2008 and 2009 for white-collar criminal defense.
