Blas Arroyo is a member of Alston & Bird’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group, and his practice has a particular emphasis on contested matters involving patent rights.
Blas has been engaged in the field of intellectual property litigation for 25 years. His experience includes both jury and non-jury trials in various federal courts throughout the United States, primarily involving issues of patent validity, infringement, and enforceability, as well as related antitrust and unfair competition claims in a wide variety of technical fields. Mr. Arroyo has also been involved in numerous appeals to the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and presented the successful argument on behalf of all defendants involving the on-sale bar in Vanmoor v. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., 201 F.3d 1363 (Fed. Cir. 2000).
He has also been actively involved in administrative inter partes matters pertaining to intellectual property, including interferences to determine priority of invention before the United States Patent and Trademark Office Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, where he is admitted to practice. He has also directed and coordinated contested proceedings pertaining to patent rights outside the United States, including numerous opposition proceedings and related matters in the European Patent Office, as well as other patent offices throughout the world.

While Blas has been actively engaged in contested matters throughout his career, he has also been proactively involved in counseling clients in the design of products, processes, and/or compositions in order to avoid potential claims of infringement based on the results of infringement studies and/or related validity investigations. He has also been active in negotiating and drafting numerous technology and patent license agreements throughout his career.
Mr. Arroyo is a member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industries, as well as various organizations related to the field of intellectual property, including the Intellectual Property Section of the American Bar Association, the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association and the AIPPI. He also serves on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. He is listed in Super Lawyers magazine.
Blas, who is fluent in Spanish, received his J.D. degree in 1981 from Washington & Lee University and a B.S. degree, with honors, from North Carolina State University in 1978.
