Summer Program
Alston & Bird developed its summer program to give you the opportunity to experience the practice of law and life at our firm. If you accept an offer for summer employment at Alston & Bird, you will work directly with lawyers in the practice areas that interest you most. Within the practice groups, you will meet and work with the people who ultimately will guide you toward a successful legal career if you join our firm as an associate.
Summer associates at Alston & Bird receive work assignments drawn from ongoing legal matters in which our lawyers and clients are actively involved. We make every effort to see that you are invited to meetings, hearings, closings, depositions and trials.
You will do real work for real clients, and you will encounter real deadlines for the work that is assigned to you. We expect summer associates to perform at the level of our first-year lawyers, assuring you that our summer program will provide a realistic view of associate life at our firm. We are committed to ensuring that your summer at Alston & Bird is filled with provocative legal work and social and professional opportunities. This will permit you and our lawyers to evaluate whether Alston & Bird is the right firm for you, and you for it, after you graduate from law school.
At Alston & Bird, we encourage our lawyers and staff to develop and maintain an easy, informal collegiality. Our summer associates are integrated into this social fabric throughout the summer, ensuring a smooth transition from law student to first-year associate. On your first day here, you will meet the other summer associates in your “class,” along with many lawyers and other members of the firm. Several people will have volunteered to guide you throughout the summer:
Your
Associate Contact
is a younger associate who will help you become acquainted with the firm and the city where your office is located. Feel free to ask your associate contact about any day-to-day matters, inside or outside the firm, that are of interest to you. Your associate contact will help you experience all that the city and firm have to offer.
Your
Mentor
is a partner, counsel or senior associate who will coordinate your work assignments from our online project system, evaluate your written work product in regularly scheduled meetings, provide constructive criticism and advice on each assignment, and offer a view of life at Alston & Bird from a long-term perspective. He/she will monitor your progress and growth from start to finish with a consistent stream of feedback, augmenting the evaluations you will also receive from the attorneys who assign each project.
Finally, throughout the summer, you will be invited to attend large and small gatherings of your summer classmates and Alston & Bird lawyers. You will have opportunities to:
Attend small, informal dinner parties at partners’ and associates’ homes with several attorneys and other summer associates
Enjoy concerts, sports events, and theatrical performances
Savor the sights, sounds, and tastes of Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto, Raleigh or Washington
