Distinguished attorneys and advisors with lifetimes of experience in how Washington works are the core of the Legislative and Public Policy Group, an esteemed collection of experts in the field which includes two former U.S. Senate Majority Leaders: Senator Bob Dole (R-KS) and Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD). Senator Dole, the 1996 Republican candidate for president and former Senate Majority Leader who served longer in a Senate leadership role (Minority and Majority) than any other Republican in U.S. history, has an enormous reservoir of knowledge and expertise—based on more than forty years at the pinnacle of political life in Washington—that has proven to be invaluable to Alston & Bird’s clients, who have turned to him and the firm for representation in our nation’s capital.
Senator Tom Daschle is one of the longest serving Senate Democratic Leaders in history, and the only one to serve twice as both Majority and Minority Leader. He was elected by his colleagues as their Democratic Leader after serving eight years in the Senate; only Lyndon Johnson served fewer years in the Senate before being elected to the position. In his capacity as Special Policy Advisor to the firm, Senator Daschle brings extensive knowledge of public policy, trade and international issues. He also has keen insight into the areas of energy, financial services, telecommunications, health care and taxation.
Joining these two distinguished men in the Legislative and Public Policy Group are Tom Scully, the former Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and numerous other former government officials with distinguished records of service at the White House, Department of Justice, Department of State, Department of the Treasury, Securities and Exchange Commission, Internal Revenue Service, Office of Thrift Supervision and Central Intelligence Agency. The group also benefit from the counsel of attorneys who were once senior staff for senators and representatives, as well as key congressional committees.
Also among the members of our group are former officials who currently serve on task forces and commissions on the Council on Foreign Relations and the Center for International and Strategic Studies. We also provide advice to foreign governments and to our own government, through such mechanisms as chairing the Pentagon’s International Security Affairs Balkans Working Group.
