COVID-19 Medical Products Supply Chain Week in Review – May 3, 2021

In the past week, the U.S. government announced new vaccination milestones reached and encouraged more people to get vaccinated. Please see details for these and other supply chain developments below:

  • On April 27, President Biden announced that COVID-19 vaccinations had exceeded 215 million, with more than 67 percent of U.S. seniors fully vaccinated and more than 80 percent of seniors with at least one shot. The President again encouraged the rest of eligible Americans to get vaccinated.
  • On April 28, the Biden Administration announced its plan to deliver $100 million worth of medical supplies to India to assist the country’s response to a new wave of COVID-19 cases. The U.S. assistance includes oxygen support and related equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), vaccine-manufacturing supplies, rapid diagnostic tests, and therapeutics. In our previous issue, we reported that the U.S. government had lifted export restrictions for certain medical products to India.
  • On April 30, the White House COVID-19 Response Team announced that over 300 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been shipped to states, tribes, territories, and federal channels in the past week. The Response Team stated that 220 million shots had been delivered, and 100 million individuals had been fully vaccinated.
  • On April 30, the FDA revoked the emergency use authorization (EUA) of the Battelle CCDS Critical Care Decontamination System at the request of Battelle. The product was authorized for use in decontaminating compatible N95 respirators for multiple-user reuse by health care personnel. On April 9, the FDA and CDC determined that there was an adequate supply of respirators to transition away from use of decontamination and bioburden reduction systems.
