Alston & Bird’s Pro Bono Efforts Recognized by BayLegal
Pro Bono Legal Services
Alston & Bird has long encouraged its lawyers to participate in various pro bono activities of the lawyers’ choosing. In order to appreciate the incredible depth, breadth and variety of pro bono activities in which Alston & Bird lawyers are involved, a brief list of examples follows:
The
Atlanta Legal Aid Society (ALAS)
was founded in 1924 by a group of Atlanta’s most prominent lawyers, including Philip Alston, Sr. Numerous Alston & Bird lawyers have served as presidents, members of the board and in other capacities with ALAS. Today, ALAS works to help the poor, elderly, mentally ill and disabled living in the five-county metro Atlanta area. In order to help with the unmet needs of this population, the Atlanta Bar has long participated in an effort known as the
Saturday Lawyers Program
, in which lawyers devote time several Saturdays a year to help provide legal services to those individuals who need it most. Attorneys in North Carolina similarly participate in a number of clinics working with
Legal Aid of North Caro
lina.
Our lawyers volunteer with organizations such as the
Capital Area Immigration Rights (CAIR) Coalition
and the
Georgia Asylum & Immigration Network
, providing legal assistance for persons fleeing persecution and seeking forms of relief from removal. We also work with
Kids in Need of Defense, Inc. (KIND)
in providing assistance to minor child victims of persecution of trafficking who are unaccompanied and in need of legal representation. By assisting with the
City Bar Justice Center’s legal clinic
and
inMotion
, Alston & Bird lawyers are able to serve homeless, disadvantaged or abused women and children in New York City.
The Truancy Intervention Project (TIP)
, an effort to eradicate school failure through school, court and community collaborations, remains an important part of the pro bono program at Alston & Bird. Since its founding in 1991, the TIP Georgia program has expanded to include 16 counties in Georgia, and in 2009, TIP D.C. was established.
