Alston & Bird hosted a Labor and Employment Executive Breakfast seminar on Thursday, October 6, 8:15am-10:00am. Eileen Scofield, Glenn Patton and Tom Kilpatrick presented the following topics at the seminar:
E-Verify has Arrived – Are You Ready?
At least 16 states, including Georgia, now mandate the use of E-Verify — effective January 1, 2012. Federal contractors are also required to use E-Verify and risk debarment in the event of noncompliance. An overview of E-Verify obligations and practical guidance for registering and using the system, including a live walk through and discussion of common mistakes made by employers was provided during this seminar.
Update on the NLRB
Composition of the Board has recently changed with the expiration of NLRB Chair Wilma Liebman’s term, but worker rights initiatives were pushed along beforehand, including a new Final Rule requiring most employers to inform employees of their rights under the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) by posting a specified notice. During this seminar, there was discussion of the progress (or lack of progress) made on Labor’s ambitious agenda under the Obama administration and prognostications for the future.
