John Hickman was quoted in a Health Plan Week article discussing self-funded insurance coverage for small employers. Hickman noted that provisions of health reform may push certain small employers toward self-funding, saying, “[E]mployers have always had significant economic advantages through self-funding.”
Digging deeper, Hickman explained that, when self-funding, employers are not required to provide “any particular slate of essential benefit, but when they do provide coverage, the prohibitions on annual and lifetime caps apply.”
