Jeff Young is the senior patent prosecution attorney in the firm’s Atlanta office. He is co-leader of the firm’s Business Method/E-Commerce Marketing Task Force. Mr. Young focuses his practice on building clients’ worldwide patent programs. He has extensive experience in advising companies on intellectual property management, obtaining patent protection in the U.S. and foreign patent offices, handling administrative patent appeals, preparing opinions on infringement and invalidity of patents, conducting due diligence investigations related to corporate transactions, and preparing license agreements. Mr. Young has particular expertise in obtaining patents for financial and other business method inventions, for software, and for mechanical technology.
Mr. Young is recognized as one of the leading Georgia intellectual property lawyers in The Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers magazine. He is also a past chair and current member of the Intellectual Property Section of the State Bar of Georgia and the Atlanta Bar Association. Jeff works with clients in diverse areas of technology, such as cellular telephone devices and systems, material handling, computer software, Internet business methods, scientific instrumentation, battery systems, packaging, construction and pollution control. His expertise includes dealing with complex mechanical systems and algorithms relating to image processing, encoded symbologies, process and machine control and instrumentation. He is often called upon to render opinions on the scope and enforceability of patent portfolios of target companies in acquisitions. He helps clients to develop strategies for effectively managing their intellectual property. Jeff consults often with the firm’s technology lawyers on a wide range of transactions in which intellectual property is a critical element. His experience also includes worldwide trademark prosecution and practice before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
Jeff has spoken on intellectual property topics to business organizations and legal groups, and makes educational presentations to clients’ employees. He has written articles for legal and industry publications such as the Best’s Review, American Banker, IP Value, BNA's Patent, Trademark & Copyright Law Journal, BNA’s Electronic Commerce & Law Report, Electronic Banking Law and Commerce Report, Licensing Journal, ABA IPL Newsletter, Mealey’s Litigation Report, and the Georgia State Bar Journal.
Jeff received his received his B.S. degree, cum laude, in physics in 1972 from The Ohio State University and his law degree from Emory University School of Law in 1976. He is an active community volunteer and is a former member of the board of the nonprofit organization Atlanta Young Singers of Callanwolde. He is currently the coordinating partner for the firm’s support of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. He is a longtime supporter of and volunteer for the Georgia Lawyers for the Arts.
