Tax Policy & Regulation

Our clients grapple daily with the intricacies of the tax laws and regulations that Congress, the White House, regulatory agencies and the courts thrust upon them. We work in helping them participate in and shape the public policy debate before, rather than after, those decisions are made. Our clients take a proactive rather than reactive approach to public policy developments, and our legislative and public policy tax attorneys work to ensure that clients know about the latest tax issues as they develop, not after they are announced.

EXPERIENCE

We have individuals with unique experience on how policy is made and who know the people who make it: government and agency officials, members of Congress and their staff, representatives of the media, think tanks and institutes, academics and the media that cover them.

Alston & Bird’s tax legislative and public policy practice is headlined by Senator Bob Dole (R-KS), whose enormous reservoir of knowledge and expertise – based on more than 40 years at the pinnacle of political life in Washington – has proven to be invaluable to Alston & Bird clients.  Senator Tom Daschle (D-SD) is an equally valued resource and as a non-attorney, focuses his services on advising the firm’s clients on issues related to all aspects of public policy.

We have represented clients before Congress, the executive branch and the Department of Treasury and IRS in Washington. We have worked directly with congressional staff, the President’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform and members of Congress to help craft legislative and regulatory language to address problems with tax law and regulatory matters. We are among the most visible and respected voices in political Washington on tax-related issues.

LOOKING AHEAD

We anticipate that during the next few years, a great deal of important tax law will be created through the regulatory process as the Department of Treasury begins to digest the many changes enacted in the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004. Our clients benefit from the counsel of attorneys who were once senior staff for senators and representatives, as well as for key congressional committees and federal agencies – Senate Finance Committee, House Ways & Means Committee, Department of Treasury, Subcommittee on Taxation and Debt Management and IRS, to name just a few.

EXTENSIVE RESOURCES

Nearly 80 tax attorneys with expertise in all areas of taxation join with the legislative and public policy attorneys to work on any legislative or regulatory matter that may arise. There is no other tax lobbying operation in Washington, D.C., that has a team of 80 deeply experienced and highly technical tax lawyers to support legislative and regulatory initiatives. This integrated structure sets us apart. The quality and integrity of our lobbying work places us in a select league of firms that can deliver both technically and politically.
