Michelle Williams is a member of the firm’s Health Care Group and Products Liability Group. She focuses her practice on the health care industry and compliance matters. She also has significant experience in the buying and selling of health care companies and hospitals, including transactions requiring attorney general approval and/or conversion from non-profit to for-profit.

Ms. Williams has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America for 2006, 2007 and 2008. She is also listed in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business in the area of health care. She is a member of the American Health Lawyers Association where she is in her second term as a vice chair of the Hospitals and Health System Practice Group. She is also a member of the Healthcare Section of the State Bar of Georgia and the Atlanta Bar Association. Ms. Williams has written or spoken on a variety of health care matters including corporate governance, evaluating the effectiveness of compliance programs, Medicare terminations, overpayments, EMTALA, medical staff issues, the Stark Law and the Anti-kickback Law.

Representative Experience

  • Successfully obtained attorney general approval for the conversion of a hospital in Augusta, Georgia from nonprofit to for-profit status for its sole sponsor.
  • Successfully obtained attorney general approval for the conversion of Minnie Boswell Memorial Hospital and negotiated the sale of the hospital to Pacer Healthcare, Inc. for the Greene County Hospital Authority.
  • Regularly counsels health care providers on the federal False Claims Act (whistle-blower or qui tam cases).
  • Former in-house counsel at University Hospitals of Cleveland and former on-loan counsel to Grady Health System and Emory University Hospital.
