Press Release September 30, 2015

Mike Petrik Elected Board Chair of Greater Atlanta United Way

Mike Petrik, a partner in Alston & Bird’s State and Local Tax Group, has been elected chair of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Atlanta. The two-year term took effect July 1, 2015.

As board chair, Petrik will help set the organization’s vision and direction and ensure execution and results.

Petrik has a long affiliation with the United Way, most recently serving as chair of its Public Policy Committee from 2007-2015. In this position, he developed United Way’s capacity to engage in public policy issues, helped gain passage of legislation to reform the state’s criminal and juvenile justice systems and expanded access to behavioral health care and supportive housing. The committee also was responsible for helping establish a separate Department of Public Health, as well as maintaining a high quality Pre-K program.

United Way of Greater Atlanta remains one of the most important civic institutions in Atlanta, and Alston & Bird has been a long-time supporter. Attorneys from the firm accounted for more than 33 leadership donors last year, and the firm raised $500,000 on behalf of United Way. In addition, the firm has been honored three times as the recipient of the Logan Cup, an award given each year to a law firm that demonstrates the highest generosity of spirit and civic commitment to its annual United Way campaign.
