Alicia Starkman is a senior associate in Alston & Bird's Labor & Employment Group. She represents management in all aspects of employment law and concentrates her practice on employment litigation and counseling. Her litigation experience includes defending employers against a range of claims, including claims of gender, race, age, religion, national origin and disability discrimination and retaliation under Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act and individual and collective actions under the Fair Labor Standards Act. In addition to litigation, Alicia routinely counsels clients on matters of employment law compliance. Alicia is a frequent speaker on the issues arising under the Family and Medical Leave Act and Americans with Disabilities Act.
Alicia earned her J.D., with honors, in 2003 from Duke University School of Law and is a member of Order of the Coif. At Duke, Alicia was the co-recipient of the Class of 2003 Public Service Award and received the award for Outstanding Achievement in family law. Alicia received her B.A., summa cum laude, in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1998.
- Successfully defended a worldwide transportation and logistics company in numerous employment discrimination lawsuits in Georgia and Alabama, including claims under Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act and state tort law.
- Represents clients, including a large financial institution, in collective actions seeking unpaid overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
- Represents clients in the defense of administrative charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, various state Fair Employment Practices Agencies, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
- Represents clients in federal appellate proceedings in the Eleventh Circuit.
- Drafting and review of employee handbooks and other employment policies and procedures, including policies concerning paid time off, computer use, social media, non-discrimination and harassment and medical leave of absence.
- Received a favorable arbitration award in a breach of contract action following a 10-day hearing.
- Obtained summary judgment in a Sarbanes-Oxley and Title VII retaliation case brought by a former employee.
- Represented a worldwide transportation and logistics company in defending numerous employment discrimination lawsuits and administrative charges.
