Eric Shimp advises corporate and public sector clients on global trade, investment and regulatory strategies, and advises multinational corporations and investment funds on strategic acquisitions and political risk management issues in Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Eric also works with trade associations and public companies to develop legislative strategies involving complex international regulatory issues in both the United States and the European Union. Eric brings nearly a decade of experience gained as a U.S. diplomat and trade negotiator covering East and Southeast Asia. He has advised sovereign governments on a range of issues, including WTO accession, investment policy planning and the negotiation of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements.
From 2000-2002, Eric served as the director for ASEAN and Korean Affairs at the United States Trade Representative (USTR), where he managed U.S. trade policy toward the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Korea and South Asia. At USTR, he handled an array of trade and investment issues, including work on the negotiations toward the Free Trade Agreement with Singapore, concluded in 2002. From 1994-2001, Eric served as a United States Foreign Service Officer. During his tenure with the U.S. State Department, Eric was posted in China, Hong Kong and Washington, D.C.
- Advises foreign sovereigns in Europe, the Middle East and Asia on a range of political, economic and legislative matters.
- Counsels a 21-member trade association on the development of domestic legislation and multilateral treaties regarding the protection of intellectual property from online piracy and abuse.
- Advises a U.S. private equity fund on NAFTA and bilateral investment treaty arbitration.
- Counsels private equity investors on regulatory management and political risk issues in Japan and Asia. Advised U.S. funds with over $3 billion under management in Asian investments.
- Advises multinational corporations and financial institutions on nuclear non-proliferation and counter-terrorism sanctions policies.
