For over 25 years, Bill has focused his practice on representation of unsecured creditors, financial institutions, trustees and indenture trustees in all aspects of significant domestic and international bankruptcy, workouts and reorganizations, including complicated litigation. In addition, he has substantial experience assisting clients in acquiring assets and operating businesses from bankruptcy estates. In addition, he leads the firm's international practice for the Bankruptcy Group, as well as the task force on municipal distressed assets (MAD). Bill is a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and a charter member of the prestigious International Insolvency Institute (the “III”). In addition, he routinely lectures and publishes both nationally and internationally on a variety of topics, including bankruptcy litigation and international insolvency issues. Since 2003, he has been a regular delegate and a presenter to UNCITRAL on bankruptcy and insolvency related issues. He is a past chair of the Atlanta Bar Association Bankruptcy Section, served on the board of directors for six years, and has been selected as a Super Lawyer in Georgia. He is also named as a leading insolvency/restructuring lawyer in the Guide to the World’s Leading Insolvency and Restructuring Lawyers.
- Represented major financial institutions in their capacity as trustee for securitized transactions in over 15 Chapter 11 cases in Delaware, New York, California and Florida (2009-2011).
- Represented a major financial institution as agent for participating lenders in $200-plus million loan in a Texas-based Chapter 11 of a large retirement home community with nine wholly owned operating subsidiaries (2009-2010).
- Represented a German company in the successful purchase of patents from a Chapter 11 debtor in Delaware (2011).
- Counseled a major German manufacturing company in a successful jury trial in Oregon of a fraudulent transfer action against a major U.S. company with Canadian and UK subsidiaries, which resulted in an award of over $1.3 billion, including punitive damages.
- Counseled large American corporation in successfully pursuing claims arising out of the Italian bankruptcy filing of Parmalat.
- Counsel to a wireless phone service provider in its acquisition of over $1 billion in wireless spectrum from a debtor in the Southern District of New York.
- Counsel to major re-insurer in a bankruptcy in the Southern District of New York of a nationally known retailer involving claims of over $1 billion.
