Peter Bassett’s practice focuses on litigation and trial work covering a broad spectrum of securities (’33 Act and ’34 Act, SEC investigations and proceedings), D&O, commercial and class action litigation. He is a member of the AIG National Union Panel counsel for the defense of securities class actions and D&O claims. Peter is recognized in the area of business litigation by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business and The Best Lawyers in America and was selected by Super Lawyers magazine.
He is a frequent author and speaker on topics relating to securities claims, class actions, D&O insurance and commercial litigation.
Peter is the past leader of the Securities Litigation Group and former chair of the firm’s Partners’ Committee and co-coordinator of Alston & Bird's Litigation Groups.
He received his J.D. degree, with highest honors, from George Washington University (1975), where he was inducted into the Order of the Coif and received the U.S. Law Week Award. He received his A.B. degree from Princeton University in 1971. He is a member of the State Bar of Georgia and the Atlanta Bar Association.
- Peter has represented Fortune 100 telecommunications, banking, textile, paper and consumer products companies in securities, ERISA and products class and derivative litigation, and also counseled and appeared for numerous middle market companies and individual directors and officers in SEC-related proceedings.
