Thomas Backen is counsel in the New York office. His practice is concentrated in the areas of contracts, general corporate law and mergers and acquisitions.
A highlight of Tom’s mergers and acquisitions experience has been the representation of clients from German-speaking countries in their acquisition of U.S. enterprises.
Tom received his J.D., with honors, from Rutgers – The State University of New Jersey, School of Law at Newark in 1984, where he was a recipient of the Chief Justice Richard J. Hughes Prize. He received his B.A. degree in German in 1972 from Fordham College. Tom also studied at the Free University of Berlin and is certified as a German/English commercial translator by the Berlin Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
He is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey, as well as the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of International Trade.

- Counsel to German-based health care manufacturers in connection with their U.S. operations, including contractual relationships, acquisitions and divestitures.
