Shiraz Tangri presented, "Bringing Renewable Energy Projects to Fruition: Aligning Players, Risks and Rewards," at this conference sponsored by the National South Asian Bar Association (NASABA). As the threat of climate change looms over the planet, the need to transition away from carbon emitting energy sources and toward renewable energy has become more urgent than ever. While there is an obvious common interest in getting large scale renewable energy generation online quickly, there are a myriad of risks and rewards that must be borne by and allocated among a long list of players along the way. Attorneys can help speed things along by being familiar with the players, knowing their interests and negotiating allocations of legal risk among the players that make it possible and profitable for them to cooperate and coordinate on the immense task of taking renewable energy projects from concept to reality. This panel discussed some of the more common obstacles to getting commercial-scale renewable energy projects from conception to successful operation, and how attorneys applying different skill sets from across practice areas can play a constructive role. This panel was designed to provide a general audience with an overview of: (1) the key players and interests involved in bringing renewable energy projects online and (2) the critical agreements employed to distribute risks and rewards among them.
