Based in Washington, D.C., Alston & Bird’s International Trade and Regulatory Group offers clients one of the most well-rounded and experienced international trade teams in the country. With over 100 years of combined experience in all aspects of international trade, our team has a comprehensive understanding of the legal and regulatory issues that create risks and opportunities for clients doing business internationally, as well as the underlying evolving government policies and interests that drive international trade regulation. We take particular pride in offering our clients a path to clarity within the complex world of international trade law and regulations, in advising clients on the practical implications of such laws and regulations on their businesses and in helping clients make the difficult judgments on what will and will not work for them.

Experience

Our international trade practice offers a depth of experience across each of the core components of an international trade practice—export controls and economic sanctions, customs, trade policy and free trade agreements, trade remedies, anticorruption compliance and supply chain management. When matters require additional knowledge, we coordinate with other practice areas, including litigation, government investigations, food, drug and device, and international tax. Our group is capable of handling the full range of client needs, including advising on sourcing and supply chain decisions, taking full advantage of duty-saving opportunities in trade agreements, creating compliance programs that ensure that imports and exports are consistent with our clients’ legal responsibilities and corporate policies, helping clients overcome sensitive regulatory hurdles to access new markets, making voluntary disclosures of actual or potential violations, negotiating enforcement settlements and overseeing corrective actions. Chambers USA wrote that “[t]he most impressive aspect of this team is its very broad, deep knowledge of customs and trade matters. They know the U.S. laws and regulations inside out.”

We believe that international trade practices and practitioners must have the capability, as we do, to “see the entire field” and help clients navigate strategic and compliance international trade regulatory imperatives. Our broad range of services helps our clients develop, improve and implement international trade compliance programs tailored to the risks present in their business operations and designed to ensure that imports, exports and other international activities are compliant and efficient.
