Alston & Bird LLP sponsored the 2009 BIO International Convention held in Atlanta.  BIO is the single largest biotechnology gathering in the world and attracted over 14,000 life science professionals from 58 different countries and 48 states.  The full Convention program featured more than 170 sessions in 22 breakout session tracks, including new tracks on drug delivery, global biotechnology issues, translational medicine and vaccines, among others.  In addition, this year’s BIO Exhibition hosted 1,827 exhibitors.

Senator Tom Daschle participated in a health care policy keynote panel that discussed current biotechnology-related bills under consideration in the U.S. House and Senate, policy options to increase access to quality health care, the need for capital and investment in the biotech industry and how to control costs within the health care system.  Others participating in the panel were William Frist M.D., former Majority Leader of the U.S. Senate; Gov. Howard Dean; Karl Rove, former Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff to former President George W. Bush; and, Susan Dentzer, Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs.

The firm hosted the by-invitation-only Executive Lounge, a unique, relaxing and private space that offered comfortable plush seating, computer terminals and wireless internet access, a special exhibit by the Atlanta History Center highlighting Atlanta's past, present and future, and a variety of food and beverage items served daily.  The firm also had a booth in the Exhibit Hall showcasing our Life Sciences practice.
