Mary BentonZach Gladney and Michael Giovannini presented at this seminar coordinated by the Tax Executive Institute -  Atlanta Chapter (TEI). The seminar discussed the following topics.

Session #1: Multistate Litigation and Policy Updates
• A discussion of hot topics in state taxation such as alternative apportionment, combined reporting, sourcing, cloud computing, nexus, tax havens and the MTC’s transfer pricing program.
Learning Objectives: Attendees: 
    • Identified the current state and local tax trends; 
    • Gained an understanding of the issues at the forefront of state tax policy to begin 2016; 
    • Learned which states are actively engaged in these issues; and 
    • Discovered the basis for positions taken by states and industry within these hot topic areas.

Session #2: Practical Insights and Audits

• A discussion of best practices for state tax controversy ranging from audits through litigation: what companies can do to put themselves in the best position to reach a successful resolution of state tax matters and what state tax litigators hope to see when the issue lands on their desk.
Learning Objectives: Attendees: 
    • Identified best practices for controversy matters from audit through litigation; 
    • Learned how best to handle an audit with an eye toward litigation; 
    • Understood the different levels of appeal and the opportunities for resolution at each level; 
    • Gained insight into administrative and judicial proceedings.
