The Surveillance Society

Smartphones and mobile apps that track consumer location and activities throughout the day; wearable devices that monitor movement and details of physical well-being; retail locations outfitted with technologies that track location and device usage; cars with advanced technologies that record and transmit location and behavior; smart appliances that record, transmit and analyze appliance usage and status, ambient noise and other data. The list goes on. What is the impact of the emergence of the Internet of Things, and the resulting environment of private-sector surveillance, on privacy and civil liberties? How can companies and privacy professionals manage concerns about these issues while continuing to promote technological innovation?
