Survey Ranks 100 Law Firms on Technological Capabilities
September 1998: Spurred by the increasing role of technology in commerce and business worldwide, and the concomitant need for law firms to remain ahead of the curve with respect to this trend, Amlaw Tech, The American Lawyer's Technology Magazine, in its Fall 1998 issue conducted its first ranking of 100 major law firms based on "technological prowess." Alston & Bird LLP tied for first place among these firms, receiving the highest ranking based on the level and quality of technology employed to improve and enhance their ability to communicate with and serve clients.
Categories of "client-friendly tools" evaluated for purposes of the ranking included:
• Percentage of PC's run with Pentium Processors
• Percentage of PC's run on Windows NT
• Use of Voice Recognition Software
• Use of Internets
• Use of Extranets
• Unrestricted Web Access
• Desktop Faxing
• Video Conferencing
• Cellular Phones
Commenting on the ranking, managing partner Ben F. Johnson III noted, "Alston & Bird views technology and information as the currency of the future. In line with this thinking we have committed significant resources to the continuing development of our technological and information-processing capabilities to enhance the proficiency of our own operations and our ability to serve and interact with clients."
"This marriage of technology and the practice of law has proven to be effective in providing our clients with more comprehensive, efficient, customized representation. We will continue to seek and exploit tomorrow's technologies and applications to benefit and serve our clients," noted Johnson.
