USA Today Quotes John Hickman on Universal Health Coverage

John Hickman was quoted in the January 17 USA Today article titled, “Universal health care plans up against U.S. Law.” The article discusses how the efforts of states and communities to provide universal health coverage for their residents are blocked by federal law. In 2006 the city of San Francisco, the first city to offer universal health coverage to its residents, was sued by restaurant owners who claimed the law violated the Employee Retirement Income and Security Act (ERISA). Hickman commented on the ruling from a lower court judge that sided with the restaurant owners; he said it “raises doubt with regard to all of the state health reform proposals.”
