Marc Scheineson was quoted in Congressional Quarterly, in an article discussing a broad import safety and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) overhaul bill sponsored by Rep. John D. Dingell (D – MI). The bill has generated opposition from the business world, as it contains dozens of new regulations on drug and food imports and safety. Scheineson, head of Alston & Bird’s food and drug practice, asked of the bill, “Do they intend freestanding legislation, or do they intend lots of warning shots across the FDA’s bow to get them to take some action?” He went on to say, “A lot of these provisions already exist within the FDA’s authority,” but enforcing them may prove more difficult. “Doing something over pharma or food processors and grocers is kind of heavy lifting, especially when you have a pro-business administration that would veto it.”
