Alston & Bird Provides Free Wills and Estate Planning to Charlotte Public School Employees

Alston & Bird has partnered with Duke Energy and Legal Services of Southern Piedmont to provide wills, estate planning and powers of attorney for North Carolina Public School employees in the Charlotte area, free of charge.

“When we first discussed a pro bono project with Duke Energy, public school employees were an easy choice,” said Brian Ellsworth, partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Group and pro bono chair for the Charlotte office. “Our public schools are under tremendous pressure, and employees are often asked to make do with extremely limited resources. Donating our time to help them is one small way of thanking them for their hard work and dedication.”

The project brought together more than 80 volunteers from Alston & Bird, Duke Energy, Legal Services of Southern Piedmont to prepare wills and additional estate planning documents for local public school teachers and other school employees. The team completed wills and related estate planning documents for 118 clients with an estimated pro bono value of more than $110,000.
