Alston & Bird Adds Prominent IP Litigator in Los Angeles

Alston & Bird has expanded its Intellectual Property Litigation Practice with the addition of David M. Stein as partner in the firm’s Los Angeles office. He joins from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, where he was a partner.

“David is a first-rate litigator whose combination of IP insight and strong legal background make him an exceptional addition to our team as we look to grow our practice in Los Angeles,” said Keith Broyles, Alston & Bird partner and co-leader of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group. “His stellar reputation litigating major patent cases and ability to deliver best-in-class execution deepen our bench and further strengthen our capabilities advising clients in high-stakes litigation.”

Stein has more than 18 years’ experience in patent and commercial litigation. He has brought cases to trial in numerous jurisdictions throughout the country, with a focus on the Eastern District of Texas. He has been involved in major patent cases regarding semiconductor devices and processing, medical devices, sporting goods and various business methods.

“Many lawyers have strong technical backgrounds, but not all of them have the ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships,” said Michael Newton, Alston & Bird partner and co-leader of the firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice. “David not only has the ability to make technical concepts understandable to lay juries, but also the ability to earn the trust and respect of his clients.”

A member of the Howard T. Markey Intellectual Property American Inn of Court, Stein is a director of the Federal Bar Association of Orange County and was recently chosen as a Lawyer Representative for the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference. He also serves on the Litigation Committee for the Intellectual Property Owner’s Association. He is a frequent lecturer on topics relating to ethics and the legal profession and has taught at Whittier Law School and the University of California, Irvine.

Alston & Bird's Intellectual Property Litigation Group is renowned for helping clients protect their most valuable IP business assets in federal and state courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and other regional circuit courts and the International Trade Commission (ITC). Managing Intellectual Property magazine named the firm “International Trade Commission Firm of the Year” in 2015 for successfully representing clients before the ITC, the world’s premiere forum for most high-stakes patent litigation. The firm was also highlighted by Corporate Counsel magazine as one of the country’s top-10 patent litigation firms in 2014.
