• Represented a global home appliance manufacturer before the International Trade Commission and in federal district court in proceedings involving patents related to water filtration.

Josh Rice is a member of Alston & Bird’s Intellectual Property Litigation Group. With his extensive engineering background, Josh has experience with district court litigation, ITC litigation, and post-grant proceedings at the USPTO, along with patent prosecution, drafting and negotiating technology transfer and licensing agreements, and patent portfolio management.

Josh received his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law, cum laude, where he served as president of the University of South Carolina Intellectual Property Law Society and the associate editor-in-chief of the South Carolina Law Review. Upon graduating, Josh was named a Compleat Lawyer (Bronze) for his academic performance and for displaying high standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism.

Before attending law school, Josh worked as a nuclear welding engineer for Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) where he constructed, overhauled, and repaired submarine and aircraft carrier reactors for the U.S. Navy and land-based reactors for the U.S. Department of Energy. At NNS, he researched, developed, and implemented joining, fabrication, non-destructive testing, and manufacturing processes for a wide range of metals and polymers. While working as an engineer, Josh obtained an M.B.A. from the College of William and Mary, concentrating in engineering management and technology development.

Josh received his B.S. in materials science and engineering, cum laude, from Virginia Tech, where he was a Dean’s Scholar for the College of Engineering.
