Alston & Bird Recognized with “Corporate Partner Award” by Community of Friends

Alston & Bird has been honored by A Community of Friends (ACOF) with its “2019 Corporate Partner Award” in recognition of the firm’s work representing the organization in winning approval of an affordable housing project in Los Angeles.

Partner Ed Casey and senior associate Nate Johnson, members of Alston & Bird’s Environment, Land Use & Natural Resources Group, led the matter for ACOF, a nonprofit housing agency, which defeated a challenge to the project made under the California Environmental Quality Act.

The project, which was opposed by an adjacent property owner, seeks to develop a 100 percent affordable housing project with units set aside for low-income, homeless, and veterans, including for those afflicted with mental health illnesses. After losing an appeal before the Los Angeles City Council, the project’s opponents then sought to block it in Los Angeles Superior Court but were denied.

The case has been closely watched by proponents of affordable and homeless housing as a test of how a project funded by the city’s $1.2-billion Proposition HHH homeless housing bond would fare against anticipated neighborhood opposition.
