Michael A. Calandra, Jr. Receives Cornerstone Award from Lawyers Alliance for New York

Michael A. Calandra, Jr., senior associate in Alston & Bird’s Finance Group, has been recognized by Lawyers Alliance for New York with its 2015 Cornerstone Award honoring outstanding pro bono legal services to nonprofits. He is one of eight winners selected from 1,650 business and transactional lawyers who volunteered through Lawyers Alliance during the past year.

Since 2007, Calandra has assisted nonprofits throughout New York City’s five boroughs and has volunteered for eight Lawyers Alliance pro bono matters, helping nonprofits from formation to dissolution and addressing myriad corporate issues in between.

Among his clients, Calandra worked with the Margert Community Corporation, which provides neighborhood preservation services, housing assistance and housing counseling to low-income tenants and homeowners, in tackling 10-year-old bylaws that had become inconsistent with the organization’s current policies. Other clients include Urban Upbound, Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts, Bethex Federal Credit Union, Black Agency Executives and Services Now for Adult Persons.

Lawyers Alliance for New York is a leading provider of business and transactional legal services for nonprofit organizations in New York City. Since the inaugural Cornerstone Awards in 1997, only 184 of 6,000 Lawyers Alliance volunteers have received the award.
