David Keating presented, "Choice on the Grid:  Geolocation Technologies and Privacy," on Friday, September 16, 11:15am - 12:15pm, at this annual program sponsored by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP).  The panel presentation looked at global data protection standards - with a focus on the U.S. - for geolocation technologies on mobile devices and applied those standards to advertising driven by location-based personalization.  The presentation examined the difficult balance between large market valuations attached to location-based advertising businesses, and data protection.  The following topics were covered in the presentation.

    • An outline of the framework of data protection laws relevant to geolocation activities on mobile devices
      • Practical tips for structuring notice and consent under emerging U.S. and EU regulatory guidance
      • An understanding of the complexity of determining when and whether data is anonymized, or remains identifiable and subject to data protection regulatory frameworks
