Alston & Bird is proud to present Staying the Course: Managing Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma in Pro Bono Legal Work.

Pro bono legal work is among the most meaningful service an attorney or staff member can offer and among the most emotionally demanding. This training equips staff attorneys, staff mentors, and volunteer advocates with the tools to recognize early signs of compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress before they lead to burnout or disengagement.

Drawing on the framework of benevolent detachment, participants will learn how to remain fully present and effective with clients navigating trauma - without absorbing that trauma as their own and without bringing their own assumptions into the advocacy relationship.

Attendees will leave with practical strategies for maintaining healthy emotional boundaries, sustaining long-term pro bono involvement, and continuing to provide high-quality, empathetic legal services even in the face of systemic pressures like resource constraints and funding cuts.

Presented by Dr. Jason Phillips, DSW, LCSW and Darcy McLean, JD
