Alston & Bird LLP To Present Seminar On Acquisitions, Joint Ventures, And Other Transactions in Latin America

Dr. Robert Pastor of The Carter Center, Inc. to Deliver Keynote Presentation: "The 21st Century of the Americas" Underscoring the extraordinary opportunities offered by the expansion of the Latin American market, the international law firm Alston & Bird LLP will hold an unprecedented seminar on business acquisitions and joint venture transactions in this increasingly active emerging market. Having served as lead counsel in over two dozen transactions in Latin American over the last several years, Alston & Bird’s Latin American Practice Group has developed this seminar to share with the local business community lessons learned and successful approaches to better help them accomplish strategic goals in Latin America. Beginning at 9:00 a.m., this half-day seminar will be held on Friday, May 15th at the Atlanta Sheraton Colony Square (188 14th Street N.E.). Alston & Bird’s Latin American Practice Group consists of lawyers from the firm’s International, Financial Services, Finance, Intellectual Property and Federal Income Tax Practice Groups. The partners and attorneys from these practice groups will review the following: *Federal Income Tax partner Sam Kaywood will present Tax Strategies for Investments: Minimizing Local Taxes; Tax Efficient Repatriation of Profits; Utilization of Financing and Royalty Arrangements; and Examples of Successful Structures. *International Practice Group leader and partner Tim Perry and attorney Johan Droogmans will present Structuring Acquisitions, Joint Ventures and Other Transactions: Utilization of Licensing, Technology or Production Agreements or Distributor Arrangements to Enter the Market; Acquisitions of Existing Businesses; and Joint Ventures in the Context of a Completely Different Legal System. *Finance partner Richard Grice will present Cross Border Financing in Latin America: Impact of Withholding Taxes and Currency Issues; Governmental Approvals and Registration Requirements; Special Financing Opportunities and Incentives; Structuring and Documentation Issues; and Enforcement and Remedy Issues. *Intellectual Property Litigation partner Blas Arroyo, International partner Steve Harris , and International attorney Eileen Scofield will present a panel forum, moderated by International partner and group leader Tim Perry, on: Intellectual Property, U.S. Sanctions, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Antitrust, Immigration, and Dispute Resolution Issues. In addition to the topics discussed, International attorney Johan Droogmans will host an inauguration of the Alston & Bird Latin American Resource Center. The Center will serve as an Internet Web resource provided by Alston & Bird with links to leading Internet sites with information on Latin America. The luncheon keynote speaker will be Dr. Robert Pastor, Professor of Political Science at Emory University and Director, Latin American - Caribbean Program, The Carter Center. He will deliver a presentation on "The 21st Century of the Americas."
