Nate Johnson Wins Disability Rights Legal Center Award for Pro Bono Work

Nate Johnson, senior associate in Alston & Bird’s Environment, Land Use & Natural Resources Group, has been recognized for his pro bono leadership as a recipient of the Disability Rights Legal Center’s (DRLC) 2018 Pro Bono Award.

Johnson, who represents pro bono clients in a number of legal settings, including immigrant rights cases, domestic violence restraining orders, and landlord-tenant disputes, was honored for his work related to the Alexandria Hotel, a residential hotel serving low-income residents in downtown Los Angeles. After uncovering severe disability and habitability law violations, Johnson alerted the hotel’s ownership and outlined specific remedial changes expected of the building and its operation. He is currently in the process of negotiating an agreement to enforce these changes.

Founded in 1975, DRLC is the oldest disability rights organization in the U.S. and a leader in championing the civil rights of people with disabilities as well as those affected by cancer and other serious illnesses.
