Labor and Employment Matters

• Representing one of the nation’s largest wholesalers of alcoholic beverages in employment class and representative Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA) actions alleging off-the-clock work during security and COVID-19 temperature checks in the Northern District of California.
• Representing a local chain of bakeries in multiple wage and hours class and representative PAGA actions alleging violations of California’s wage and hour laws, including meal period and rest break violations in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
• Represented a software platform company which provides a sale-by-owner marketplace for recreational vehicles and boats against claims of misclassification by a former independent contractor in a representative PAGA action in Los Angeles Superior Court.
• Obtained summary judgment in a PAGA case in which the San Diego County Superior Court determined that plaintiff, a temporary worker supplied to a scooter company, lacked standing to represent the group of aggrieved employees.
• Obtained appellate court affirmance of dismissal on behalf of one of the world’s largest parcel delivery and logistics companies in a Fair Credit Reporting Act putative class action in Alameda County Superior Court.
• Represented a temporary staffing agency in prevailing wage cases involving several public works projects in Northern California.
• Obtained dismissal of a complaint alleging personal liability for violations of the California WARN Act against a former chief executive officer of a software company in Los Angeles Superior Court.
• Represented a transportation and logistics company in a single-plaintiff matter involving claims under the Fair Employment and Housing Act; obtained summary adjudication on several of the former employee’s claims which postured the remaining claims for a favorable settlement.

Katie Owen handles complex commercial and employment disputes with a focus on class and representative actions. Katie also represents businesses in wrongful termination and fair employment matters, including sexual harassment, discrimination, and retaliation. She approaches cases practically and uses efficient and common-sense strategies to keep litigation in check.

Clients also rely on Katie for preventative counseling and risk assessment on a variety of issues as well as insight on the development of company policies, including employee handbooks, arbitration agreements, executive compensation agreements, privacy policies, and standalone personnel policies. Katie proactively works with businesses to identify and manage their legal risks and develop creative solutions.

Before becoming an attorney, Katie externed for the Hon. John A. Kronstadt of the Central District of California and the Hon. Gregory W. Alarcon of the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
