Alston & Bird Teams Up with Georgia State University on Data Analytics

Alston & Bird and Georgia State University have announced a joint effort to develop broad-based competency among the firm’s attorneys in leveraging data science and analytics to help drive new levels of client service and satisfaction.

Working with Georgia State’s Legal Analytics Lab – a collaboration between the university’s College of Law and the Institute for Insight, the data analytics unit at the J. Mack Robinson College of Business – Alston & Bird will gain access to a world-class research and training program in the use of text mining, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to detect patterns, predict outcomes, and derive insights related to litigation and transactional law.

“We are excited to be working with Georgia State in anticipation of our clients’ growing demands in this space,” said Alston & Bird Chairman and Managing Partner Richard Hays. “Data analytics applications provide numerous opportunities to see and seize new ways to deliver insights and efficiencies to maximize the client experience.”

As part of the joint program, Georgia State will conduct on-site training for Alston & Bird lawyers and professional staff to build technical competency through workshop and case study learning focused on artificial intelligence, new computational methods, and other analytics approaches.

The program will also feature Alston & Bird attorneys as guest lecturers in graduate-level classes within the College of Law and Institute for Insight about the firm’s investment in analytics, advancing the firm’s reputation as an innovator in this area. It will also give the firm an opportunity to participate in analytics programming on campus.

“Robinson’s Institute for Insight provides the capability for an interdisciplinary approach to exploring technology, solving real data issues, and creating new ways to advance business,” said Robinson College Dean Richard Phillips. “We are excited to extend this effort to make an impact on the business of law through this unique partnership with the College of Law and Alston & Bird.”

Alston & Bird’s relationship with Georgia State further positions the firm as a leader in legal innovation and technology.

In 2018, Alston & Bird was highlighted in a study by the BTI Consulting Group in which general counsel ranked the firm as an innovation champion and part of a select group of law firms “truly leading the pack when it comes to reshaping the legal industry to better serve clients.”

“Georgia State is a national leader in training students and the legal profession in the innovative use of legal analytics to solve client problems,” said Wendy Hensel, dean of the College of Law. “We are thrilled to partner with Alston & Bird to advance state of the art skill development that has the potential to revolutionize the practice of law.”
