- Represented a Fortune 50 multinational corporation in negotiating a creative filing agreement with a state revenue department, resulting in tax savings in excess of $100 million.
- Represented a Fortune 50 retailer in structuring a private REIT in order to achieve multistate tax savings in excess of $100 million.
- Represented a multinational auto manufacturer in connection with the constitutionality of a dividends-received deduction. The Maryland Department of Revenue conceded after the filing of initial pleadings.
Mike Petrik concentrated his practice on sophisticated, multistate tax planning and disputes for businesses, including income tax, franchise tax, sales/use tax and other state and local taxes. He maintained a national administrative tax dispute and negotiation practice, including audit appeals, the negotiation of special filing or apportionment methods and voluntary disclosure “amnesty” applications. Mike also has extensive experience in developing and implementing new corporate structures designed to achieve multistate tax efficiencies.
Mike was a frequent lecturer before professional groups and has authored or contributed articles appearing in various national tax journals. He was a member of the editorial advisory boards of several tax publications and has also been the Georgia correspondent for State Tax Notes. Clients valued Mike because he is a highly regarded industry teacher and thought leader. He has extensive experience developing and implementing new corporate structures designed to achieve multistate tax efficiencies. He is a past chair of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce’s Tax & Finance Policy Committee.
