Healthy Byte | Key Updates for FY2026 HHS Funding and Health Extensions

Fiscal year 2026 appropriations for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has passed the House with virtually level funding but with targeted boosts for National Institutes of Health (NIH) research, health preparedness programs, and aging‑in‑place initiatives. The package also includes major health policy extensions, from pharmacy benefits manager (PBM) transparency reforms to future Medicare coverage for multicancer early detection tests, along with multiyear extensions for telehealth, hospitals, community health centers, and other key programs.

With a funding deadline approaching, congressional negotiations—particularly around the Homeland Security appropriations bill—will determine whether FY2026 appropriations are finalized on time.

Watch Laura Friedel and Alex Graf give an overview of the FY2026 HHS funding outlook, key program priorities, and the latest federal health policy extensions.
