• Counseled food and beverage manufacturers on regulatory compliance, claim substantiation, and litigation risk with respect to labeling of products.
• Advised food retailers (quick service restaurants, consumer product manufacturers, and prepared and packaged food manufacturers) on federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
• Assisted domestic and global clients in the recycled plastics industry with obtaining Letters of No Objection from the FDA, establishing the capability of recycling processes to produce post-consumer recycled material that is suitable for use in food contact applications.
• Prepared and filed food contact notifications on behalf of large polymer, resin, and chemical companies to obtain premarket clearances from FDA for substances intended for use in contact with food.
• Counseled domestic and global clients on regulatory pathways and strategic considerations for obtaining market authorization for their products in various jurisdictions including the United States, European Union, South America, and Asia.

Ryan D’Souza focuses his practice on federal and state regulatory compliance and enforcement matters impacting the food and beverage, drug, and cosmetics industries. He assists clients with product and ingredient commercialization, labeling and marketing claims, regulatory submissions, and responses to enforcement actions.

Before joining the firm, Ryan provided clients with strategic advice and regulatory guidance to bring recycled polymers and new food contact materials, including plastics, biopolymers, inks, adhesives, coatings and components thereof to market. Ryan also helped food establishments and consumer product manufacturers navigate complex federal and state requirements pertaining to sustainability and recyclability. While in law school, Ryan served as a legal affairs intern at Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and as a research assistant with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Center on Drugs and Public Policy Research. Before law school, Ryan assisted pharmaceutical clients with the clinical development and post-marketing surveillance of CNS-active drugs.

Ryan earned his J.D., magna cum laude, Order of the Coif, from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, where he served as the senior articles editor for the Maryland Journal of Health Care Law and Policy.
