Alston & Bird’s New York Office Gives Back to the Community
Pro Bono Commitment
Matthew Mamak, partner in the Corporate & Business Transactions Group, is chair of the New York City Pro Bono Committee, which orchestrates attorney participation in a variety of pro bono programs. Our New York office attorneys are intimately involved with a number of different initiatives, including the Lawyers’ Alliance for New York, Volunteer Appellate Defender Program, and Housing Court Volunteer Lawyers Program, established by litigation partner Steve Penaro in tandem with New York’s Legal Aid Society. Knock Knock Give a Sock
The New York office annually hosts a “Meet Your Neighbors” dinner with Knock Knock Give a Sock, an organization dedicated to collecting socks for the homeless in New York City. Alston & Bird is proud to be the first law firm in the city to partner with KKGS to host a Meet Your Neighbors dinner.
Read Ahead
Since 2004, Alston & Bird attorneys and staff have been reading to and mentoring elementary school students during lunch. Read Ahead ignites a love of reading in young students through mentoring, improving their confidence and their odds for success in school and life.
Operation Backpack
The New York office supports Volunteers of America on its Operation Backpack initiative, which helps provide homeless children in NYC with backpacks fully stocked with all the required school supplies for the upcoming school year. In 2018, we were able to collect enough funds to stuff 150 backpacks.
Pajama Program
The Pajama Program has been providing children in need with pajamas and books since 2001. The program is committed to every child’s right to wear fresh, clean pajamas to bed and to enjoy a bedtime story that fires their imagination. The program believes that every child should have a loving bedtime and restful good night as the start to a positive, empowering good day.
JP Morgan Corporate Challenge
Alston & Bird is an enthusiastic participant in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge, a 3.5 mile run/walk in Central Park. The New York challenge raises money to benefit the Central Park Conservancy. We invite our clients to strap on their running shoes and join Team A&B for this fun run for a cause!
New York Food Bank – Justice Served
The New York office participates in the Justice Served Campaign, an effort led by NYC’s legal community to close the meal gap in our city. The campaign raises funds that will benefit Food Bank For New York City and its hunger-relief programs, which reach 1 in 5 New York City residents throughout the five boroughs.
