Historically, the focus of cybersecurity in health care has been on preventing and responding to data breaches. While this is still vitally important, the shift of cybercriminals from stealing patient data to locking down health care delivery organization’s systems with ransomware, the risk has broadened to include patient harm, such as physical injury or even death. This article discusses how cyber events can put patients at risk and outlines steps health care delivery organizations’ boards and executives should take to minimize the impact of such events.
