The House has already begun its August recess, but the Senate remains in session for one more week. However, President Trump has continued pressuring the Senate to cancel August recess in a bid to advance additional priorities from the Administration.
This week, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) will continue efforts to package multiple spending bills already approved by the Appropriations Committee in a minibus, although that process has been complicated because all 100 senators must agree on the package for the Senate to have a time agreement and move the bills before the end of this week.
The upper chamber will continue debate on the nominations of David Wright to be a member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and then Earl Matthews to be general counsel at the Department of Defense. Emil Bove may also be confirmed to a lifetime appointment on the federal appellate court. Further, Thune has scheduled votes on William Kimmitt to be undersecretary for international trade at the Commerce Department, Susan Monarez to be director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Sam Brown to be undersecretary for memorial affairs at the Veterans Affairs Department.
President Donald Trump is in Scotland, where he’ll meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to continue progress on trade discussions. Over the weekend, the United States and EU reached an agreement on the framework of a trade deal, with the bloc set to face a 15% levy on most exports, including its automobiles.
In the past week, Trump has also signed trade frameworks with Japan and Indonesia. These efforts come days before the next round of reciprocal tariffs are set to begin on August 1.
