The House and Senate are in session this week, with both chambers focusing on their versions of the annual national defense spending bill, including the consideration of hundreds of filed amendments.
The House will also vote on legislation that increases criminal penalties for noncitizens illegally crossing the border multiple times, while the Senate will vote on the nominations of Edward Artau to be district judge for the Southern District of Florida and Maria Lanahan to be district judge for the Eastern District of Missouri.
Appropriators will continue negotiating on the details of an appropriations package to extend federal funding beyond the September 30 deadline and avoid a government shutdown. Republican leadership has discussed a clean stopgap bill to extend funding into November, although the Administration has publicly stated that it prefers an extension until spring 2026, potentially complicating negotiations.
Senate Republicans, meanwhile, are having further discussions on an effort to change the upper chamber’s rules for nominations to expedite the confirmation process for a large tranche of President Trump’s nominees, which remains a priority for the White House. This accelerated procedure will not apply to cabinet-level nominees or judges.
Separately, the Administration is asking the Supreme Court for expedited consideration on a ruling related to President Trump’s ability to impose unilateral tariffs under the guise of a national emergency after a lower court ruled he exceeded his authority.
