• Representing one of the largest global companies and the second largest oil company in the U.S. by revenue- in legal challenges to California’s de facto ban on well stimulation treatment operations.
• Representing oil and gas exploration and production companies in legal challenges to the City of Los Angeles Oil and Gas Drilling Ordinance and County of Los Angeles Oil and Gas Drilling Ordinance, which both immediately ban new oil and gas extraction activities and require the removal of existing operations after an amortization period in their respective jurisdictions.
• Providing regulatory and litigation advice for a natural gas, oil exploration, and production company, which produces nearly 25% of California’s oil and natural gas.

Land Use 

• Obtained summary judgment on behalf of a real estate developer in litigation challenging the County of Orange’s decision to approve two mixed-use projects, valued at over $4 billion, on portions of the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro that are now owned by the county and located within the City of Irvine.

Toxic Tort, Chemical Exposures, and Cost Recovery

• Defending a real estate development company in a mass tort action involving more than 160 plaintiffs claiming personal injuries and property damage arising from alleged releases of hazardous particulates during construction at one of the largest mixed-use developments in Los Angeles County.
• Counsel for the largest U.S. retail corporation, and largest company worldwide by revenue, defending the company against dozens of claims involving alleged exposures to heavy metals, bisphenol-A (BPA), phthalates, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), and other Proposition 65-listed chemicals.
• Representing a real estate developer in a putative class action and individual lawsuits seeking personal injury and property damage from the alleged failure to disclose the presence of radioactive substances at a former naval shipyard that is the subject of San Francisco’s largest development project in a century.
• Representing a major aerospace company in an action brought by the City of Riverside for alleged TCE and perchlorate contamination in its water supply system allegedly stemming from the Rockets, Fireworks and Flares Superfund site in Rialto, California.
• Represented one of the largest global companies and the second largest oil company in the U.S. by revenue in an action involving allegations of occupational exposure to benzene.
• Represented one of the largest producers and distributors of maintenance and cleaning solutions in multiple actions involving allegations of occupational exposure to benzene, each resulting in dismissals for waiver of costs.

Garrett Stanton is a senior associate in Alston & Bird’s Environment, Land Use & Natural Resources Group. Garrett has experience representing corporations and high net-worth individuals in litigation matters throughout California in both federal and state courts.

Garrett has experience managing all aspects of litigation. His experience includes preparing pretrial pleadings and law and motion practice, including demurrers, motions to strike, motions to compel, motions for summary judgment, motions for judgment on the pleadings, and motions in limine. Garrett also has experience with trial preparation, preparing for and participating in settlement negotiations and mediations, propounding and responding to written discovery, managing experts, taking and defending depositions, and contributing on appellate matters.

Garrett earned his J.D. in 2018 from UC Davis and received his B.A. in 2015 from the University of Texas at Austin where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He previously served as a judicial extern for the Hon. Dennis M. Perluss of the California Court of Appeal, Second District and the Hon. Stephen H. Glickman of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
