Alston & Bird’s Legislative & Public Policy Group previews the week ahead highlighting anticipated federal legislative, regulatory, and political activity, and key upcoming actions in Congress, the Administration, and relevant policy arenas.
Administration
- President Trump announced yesterday that the United States and Iran have reached an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal is tentatively scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on Friday and would launch negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
- President Trump is attending the G7 Summit in Evian, France this week. Global leaders are expected to discuss the Iran peace deal, Russia’s war against Ukraine, and artificial intelligence, among other issues.
House
- The House is out of session this week.
Senate
- Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) expired Friday after lawmakers were unable to agree to an extension. Democrats continue to oppose renewal, while Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte remains positioned to become acting Director of National Intelligence on Friday.
- To break the FISA logjam, Senate Republicans plan to move quickly on the nomination of Jay Clayton to serve as Director of National Intelligence this week. Senate GOP leaders aim to confirm Clayton to the post by Friday.
- Modified housing legislation is likely to reach the Senate floor this week. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act passed the Senate in March, and the House approved an amended version in May. The bicameral deal would restore some Senate provisions and retain most of the House’s bank deregulation measures.
