E&E News | Would GOP Senate Sway Biden’s Choice of Administrator?

This week, the House Republican leadership is expected to push for a short-term stopgap spending bill before government funding expires on December 20. In the Senate, Democrats struck a deal with Republican Senators to advance district court nominees while abandoning four pending appellate nominations. Republican opposition ended any chance of a full five-year Farm Bill advancing this session.

Both the House and Senate are back in session. The House will continue working on a government funding plan, with current authorizations set to expire on September 30. After Speaker Mike Johnson’s first proposed stopgap measure was pulled from floor consideration last week, congressional leadership must work toward a continuing resolution that can pass both chambers with bipartisan support to avoid a shutdown. The Senate will vote on legislation establishing a legal right to in vitro fertilization.

Both the House and Senate are in session. The Senate will work on a national security package containing enhanced border security policies and additional aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. House Republicans have opposed any deal that does not meet all their demands. President Biden has signaled he is willing to take substantial steps to shut down the border in exchange for the bill’s enactment. Additionally, congressional appropriators agreed over the weekend on top-line spending allocations for the 12 fiscal year funding bills. The House has indicated it may consider a bipartisan agreement on a nearly $80 billion tax policy proposal that focuses on business deductions and the child tax credit.

The House and Senate are in session and will work to pass another temporary spending bill, which would extend government funding beyond the upcoming deadlines of January 19 and February 2 to give negotiators more time to reach agreements on the 12 spending bills for the fiscal year. The CR, which would extend certain agency funds to March 1 and others to March 8, comes after a top-line spending deal was reached for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2024 government funding. However, more time is needed to enact and pass those spending bills.

Both the House and Senate will be in session this week, although the House still does not have a Speaker after the latest GOP nominee, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), failed to garner enough support for his bid last week. Nine other members have announced their candidacy for Speaker, and elections will resume this week. Meanwhile, the Senate will vote on the nomination of Michael Whitaker as head of the Federal Aviation Administration.
