Look Ahead to the Week of August 31, 2026 | Government Funding Vote Headlines a Brief House Session

Alston & Bird’s Legislative & Public Policy Group previews the week ahead highlighting anticipated federal legislative, regulatory, and political activity, and key upcoming actions in Congress, the Administration, and relevant policy arenas.

Administration

  • The Group of 20 nations (G20) will meet in Asheville, NC this week to discuss global economic trends and challenges. Topics include global supply chain reinforcements, inflation, and international investment opportunities.
  • The U.S. and Iran exchanged attacks over the weekend for the first time in a month. Global oil prices jumped in response to the reignited conflict.

House

  • On Tuesday evening, the House will vote on the Senate-passed continuing resolution to fund the government through December 11, 2026. The vote will be under suspension of the rules, requiring two-thirds of present members to support the legislation. Government funding expires on September 30, 2026.
  • After this week’s session, the House will recess until September 14 in observance of the Labor Day and Rosh Hashanah holidays. The House may then adjourn before its scheduled October 1 recess, sending members home early to campaign for the midterm elections.

Senate

  • The Senate is out of session until Monday, September 14.
