Rosemarie Thurston, partner and leader of Alston & Bird’s REITs and Real Estate Funds Team, has been named a “2019 Legal Counsel of the Year” in commercial real estate by the Real Estate Forum and GlobeSt.com.
Selected as part of the annual “Women of Influence” series sponsored by the Real Estate Forum, Thurston was recognized among an elite group of attorneys described as “remarkable commercial real estate professionals who drive the industry forward.”
Thurston focuses her practice on advising public and private real estate firms on complex securities matters, including leading more than $50 billion in capital-raising transactions over the past five years.
Among the many significant deals she advised on in the past year, Thurston served as lead counsel to CatchMark Timber Trust Inc., as an NYSE-listed timber REIT, in one of the largest U.S. timberland transactions in the past decade. The deal involved the acquisition of 1.1 million acres of Crown Pine East Texas timberlands for approximately $1.39 billion in a joint venture with a consortium of institutional investors.
Other deals Thurston advised on in 2018 include serving as lead counsel for Starwood Real Estate Income Trust Inc., a public, non-listed REIT sponsored by Starwood Capital, in its $5 billion initial public offering, and lead counsel for Nuveen Global Cities REIT Inc., a public, non-listed REIT sponsored by Nuveen Real Estate, an affiliate of TIAA, in its $5 billion initial public offering.
Active in industry circles, Thurston serves on the associate board of governors, government relations committee, and SEC subcommittee of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts. She is also a member of the board of trustees and former chair of the legal and regulatory committee of the Institute for Portfolio Alternatives (formerly the Investment Program Association). Additionally, Thurston has co-chaired the Information Management Network “Non-Traded REIT Symposium” twice annually since 2005.
Thurston will be honored along with the other award recipients at the inaugural GlobeSt. “Women of Influence Conference,” to be held July 10-11 in Broomfield, CO.
